No better time or place for the perfect tea!
The Old Course Hotel, Golf resort & Spa in St Andrews is proud to boast the most British of all Gold Medals – for a cup of tea!
Following the Great Taste Awards, the largest and most trusted awards scheme for speciality fine food and drink, two of the resort’s teas have been awarded gold stars – the Planters Afternoon tea and the new Vithanakande tea.
Since 1994, the Great Taste Awards have judged over 60,000 products. Each year every single entry is blind-tasted by panels of specialists including top chefs, cookery writers, food critics, restaurateurs and fine food retailers. The awards provide recognition for those who make "truly great-tasting food & drink" and help small, artisan producers improve their recipes through feedback from the experts.
Both prize teas offer the taster something completely different. The Planters Afternoon tea is golden bright in appearance, with a delicate and unique light flavour – and is the perfect accompaniment for sweet tasting afternoon treats. The new Vithanakande is something else entirely - a single estate tea. Single estate teas are akin to single cask whiskies and this tea is served, unsurprisingly, in the resort's iconic Road Hole Bar - famous for it’s collection of over 280 malts representing every Scottish distillery. The Vithanakande is blessed by nature. Parochial winds sweep through the adjacent rainforest and, when arriving at the plantation, infuse the tea with forest fruit flavours.
Daniel Pereira, Resort General Manager, says: “We are particularly proud of our exceptional selection of teas, and we’re delighted to have two of them recognised with gold awards. Both come from a family run business, PMD Tea, overseen today by the third generation of the founder. They are a fantastic supplier and provide us with some of the best teas in the world." Daniel adds: “Our relationship with PMD Tea has flourished with the revival of the afternoon tea tradition – and naturally our version of it provides guests with an outrageous five star experience."
Those enjoying afternoon tea at the resort can also choose from the world famous Lovers Leap, O-Zone Friendly and Planters Breakfast to name just three on the menu.
